After the taping of Poker After Dark, after the obligatory dinner with the family and friends to commemorate the experience, I was heading back up to my hotel room, Full Tilt Poker.net patch still affixed to my shirt.

Another couple riding the elevator said, “Oh, professional poker player?”, to which I replied: “For a day, yeah.” I think that one incident sums up the entire experience for me.

LAS VEGAS — I had no idea what to expect at 10 a.m. Monday when I made my way to the soundstage for the show.

I figured I’d probably show up at 10, plop myself into my tournament seat and leave by 11 wondering what on earth just happened to me and hopefully get to meet my favorite pros in the process. Nothing could have been further from the truth.

LuckyDog Russ here…

Just heard from Ken Light a short while ago. A long day of taping Monday for a future Poker After Dark episode on NBC left him drained. He’ll report on the experience tomorrow (Tuesday) after collecting his thoughts about his once-in-a-lifetime thrill.

Don’t miss it!

LAS VEGAS — Today’s the day and I’m not nervous anymore. I wasn’t very nervous yesterday either.

I’m just flat out looking forward to going down and playing some poker with these guys. It makes me excited to think about them on their way over here, maybe driving here even as I write this, or at least getting ready to be on TV just like I am.

I’m going through a million things in my head, though, like how much I’ll talk to them, how much they’ll talk to me, how I’ll handle a big pair early, if I’ll go over to the bar and talk to Shana like some players do, and if I do what on earth I’ll say.

I’ll probably get extremely nervous right before the cards start flying. This is what happens when I have to give talks at scientific conferences as well. I’m not nervous before the talk until the guy before me is finishing up and I start panicking, hoping that a fire will break out or they’ll have left me off the list and I won’t have to talk or something will save me. Then I get up there and about one sentence in I relax and I’m fine.

Ozzy Osbourne once said that the concert he’s not nervous before will be his last, so I think I’ll be OK.

More to come later, although I can’t give actual results on here. I’ll try to talk about hands, the experience, and just generally make it the best read of the series.

Stay tuned!

LAS VEGAS — I was a bit too tired last night for a post. I got to the room at about 10 P.M. and crashed right away.

That was good, though. That was my plan, so I got plenty of rest for today’s tournament. But it does mean I wasn’t able to report on last night’s goings-on.

LAS VEGAS — I promised more yesterday and I failed to deliver. I also failed to find my way to bed before 5 a.m.

It was actually going to be an early night for Emily and me! The trip to The Strip was cut short when our feet started to hurt badly from the earlier part of the day’s walking all the way up and down and all around any casino we came to.

It was, however, not without highlights.

LAS VEGAS — As they often do, my plans last night to get myself onto a proper sleep schedule went awry. It’s not that I stayed up too late, that simply was not possible. It’s not that I didn’t stay up late enough, either, it was tough but I did.

However, I was not able to stay asleep past 7 a.m., 10 a.m. my time. I am about the furthest one can possibly get from a morning person without feeding off the blood of the living, so this has been a strange day.

LAS VEGAS — I’ve learned a couple things about Las Vegas today.

First, everything comes to those who wait – in line. I’ve lost track of how many I’ve seen. Security lines at the airport, lines to get both on and off the plane, even a line to get to the shuttle to get to the line to rent the car to get to the line to pick up the car.

Which brings me to lesson number two: Las Vegas people drive in Braille. Drive on Las Vegas streets for more than 2 seconds and you start to float around aimlessly, as there are no lines (this is the only exception to the previous rule). Then I noticed raised dots between the lanes. Apparently some people here spend time crawling around the roadways feeling their way about town.

What would it be like, as an amateur, to go up against five superstar poker players in a one-table $120,000 shootout on NBC’s popular Poker After Dark telecast? With Shana Hiatt right there, watching, smiling?

We’ll all find out together starting this weekend, exclusively right here at www.luckydogpoker.com!

Ken Light, a 28-year-old Rutgers University graduate student from New Jersey, has agreed to blog his adventure as the first amateur to ever appear on PAD. Adding to his excitement: This is his first trip to Las Vegas!

Ken is due to arrive in Vegas on Friday and expects to file his first post that night. He’ll describe the Vegas experience through the weekend. Then on Monday, he’ll take us behind the Poker After Dark cameras when the winner-take-all tournament is recorded.

You won’t want to miss a single entry!

Dates set for 2008 WSOP

Posted by Russ Scott on October 8th, 2007

2008 World Series of Poker set for May 30 through July 17 at the Rio in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS – October 8, 2007 – Harrah’s Entertainment Inc (NYSE: HET) announced today that the 39th annual World Series of Poker® Presented by Milwaukee’s Best Light will be staged at the Rio™ All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas from May 30 through July 17, 2008.

“The team is still hard at work on the schedule of events for next year, but we’ve received so many requests for the dates that we decided to announce them now,” said Jeffrey Pollack, WSOP Commissioner.

“We’ll actually open the WSOP tournament room the week of May 26th for two special events,” said Geno Iafrate, vice president and assistant general manager of the Rio. “This ‘soft opening’ will give players a chance to register early and avoid the lines we had last year during opening weekend – our busiest time.”
