Poker players helping quake victims

Posted by Russ Scott on May 29th, 2008

Hey online poker players:

If you haven’t done so already, please consider making a donation to the China Quake Relief Fund on PokerStars. The site has made it super-easy to help the millions who are suffering after the monster earthquake two weeks ago.

All you have to do is go to the Main Lobby, click on “Tourney” and then “Special” and you’ll see entries marked in red to accept your donation in amounts ranging from $1 to $100. No tournament is involved; the donation will automatically be transferred from your account and forwarded to the Red Cross.

Not only is this a great idea, but PokerStars will match every dollar donated. The links for making donations expire late Sunday night.

As of 1:45 p.m. today, there were 7,286 donations of $1, 2,035 for $5, 1,012 for $10, 572 for $20, 252 for $50, and 322 for $100. That’s a total of $167,642 donated so far counting the double-up by PokerStars.

The poker community always is generous toward charities and during special circumstances because, well, it’s just the right thing to do.

How would you have played this?

Four fresh LuckyDog Poker columns are now posted, including this week’s piece which asks readers to comment on my play in a recent FTOPS online tournament.

The Full Tilt Online Poker Series tournament drew nearly 2,000 players. I finished just 12 spots out of the money, but did I play it wrong at the end? What would you have done?

Other columns tackle a question about a possible illegal betting motion, the World Series of Poker’s decision to delay this year’s final table action by FOUR MONTHS, and reader reaction to the WSOP’s groundbreaking change.

As always, your comments & questions are welcome — either online below each column on this site or via e-mail to russ@luckydogpoker.com.

Are WPT and HSP on GSN in trouble?

Posted by Russ Scott on May 15th, 2008

Are the World Poker Tour and High Stakes Poker shows on the Game Show Network in jeopardy?

I wondered if the switch of the WPT to GSN, in particular, was a big step toward its demise when it was announced. The show was a ratings leader on the Travel Channel for years.

In a side note, the WPT reportedly is looking for its fourth hostess in four years, in the wake of the popular Shana Hiatt’s three-year stint in the position at the show’s outset.

Bob Pajich of Card Player lays out the details.

NEWS RELEASE

FINAL NINE PLAYERS WILL SQUARE-OFF THIS NOVEMBER ON ESPN

LAS VEGAS – May 1, 2008 – The World Series of Poker® (WSOP) Presented by Milwaukee’s Best Light today announced a groundbreaking change that will more closely align the televised presentation of the world’s largest, richest and most prestigious poker tournament with other premier sports broadcasts.

The last nine players of the $10,000 World Championship of No-Limit Texas Hold’em, known as the Main Event, will compete on November 9-10 instead of the originally scheduled date of July 16.

“Our intent is to provide an even bigger stage for our players,” said Jeffrey Pollack, Commissioner of the World Series of Poker. “Now fans and viewers will ask ‘who will win’ our coveted championship bracelet instead of ‘who won.’ The excitement and interest surrounding our final nine players will be unprecedented.”
